When considering how to improve health outcomes for low-income individuals, most people think about providing access to good medical care and keeping the cost of that care as low as possible. What people rarely think about is the connection between good health and quality affordable housing.
For instance, when families have high housing payments, they have less money to buy nutritious food or to pay for medical care, making them more vulnerable to chronic illnesses. And, when individuals don't have stable housing, research has found that they are more likely to engage in risky behaviors that can make them sick. Sometimes it's a person's home itself that makes them sick, if it exposes them to toxins like lead, or to insect or rodent infestations.
This edition of What Funders Need to Know explores these connections and highlights some promising practices by both government and business that help low-income individuals get housed, stay healthier, and lower overall costs.
Ultimately, affordable housing is fundamental to improving health outcomes for low-income people. For funders interested in housing or in health, we suggest four ways to bolster these connections.

A CNJG corporate member asked for help with the scenario in which a corporate policy of not supporting religious organizations in their grantmaking, causes problems helping during a disaster in an urban or rural area, when the program that is delivering the disaster relief is based within a church. They want to work with those programs (a church serves as the program’s fiscal sponsor) who support efforts for hunger, homelessness, substance abuse recovery, racial equity, etc. as long as they do not discriminate and do no limit it to their own congregations. The request for policy samples to work around this religious organization hurdle as long as there is no discrimination or funding the actual church’s worship, was compelled by CNJG staff and is listed here.

What do the latest trends in family philanthropy tell us about effectiveness and impact?
Join us to dive into select findings from the Trends 2025 report. You will hear from family foundations about how these trends relate to their impact and effectiveness.
We’ll cover topics including relationships, accountability, and equity, and ask questions like:
- How are family relationships changing, especially when involving the next generation?
- How are funders being accountable to their communities? What perspectives are you including in your strategy and decision-making conversations?
- What changes have you implemented over the past five years, and what are you continuing to learn?
Cost: This event is free for CNJG Members who are family foundations.
Other types of foundations are ineligible to join this webinar.
This program is a CNJG membership benefit for family foundation members, including staff and trustees, in partnership with the National Center for Family Philanthropy.

This project represents the most extensive independent study on DAFs to date.
Thanks to the collective efforts of 111 DAF programs that voluntarily provided anonymized data to the research team, the dataset covers nine years of activity from more than 50,000 accounts, with over 600,000 inbound contributions to DAFS and more than 2.25 million outbound grants from DAFs.
The DAFRC research team hopes this data will be used to improve best practices, inform relevant regulation, or enhance the field’s use of DAFs as a philanthropic tool for donors, DAF sponsoring organizations, and other sector partners.
