The Westfield Foundation has awarded more than $120,000 in Q4 2024 grants to eight local organizations, reinforcing its mission to support critical community needs through partnerships and forward-thinking initiatives. These grants, focusing on education, social services, arts and economic development, ensure that diverse populations across Westfield and neighboring communities have access to essential programs and resources that foster long-term stability, growth and impact.
“Our Q4 grants reflect the Foundation’s commitment to identifying and investing in meaningful partnerships that support the evolving needs of our community,” said Executive Director Katie Curran Darcy. “With over $420,000 distributed in 2024, we are proud to fund organizations working on the front lines of change and look forward to an even greater impact in 2025.”

As The Westfield Foundation marks its 50th anniversary, it proudly announces a $225,000 grant from the Bertha E. Bogaert Fund to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Union County (BGCUC) to support a new Teen Center at their recently secured and renovated facility in Plainfield.
This grant continues a decade-long partnership between The Westfield Foundation and BGCUC, with total support now exceeding $625,000. The new Teen Center will offer a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for teens—providing leadership development, gang prevention programming, mental health resources, and career exploration. A new trade education initiative will feature a professional recording studio and media center, designed and built in collaboration with local tradespeople and BGCUC members, to give youth ages 13–18 hands-on experience and workforce readiness skills.
Rising Tide Capital (RTC), a prominent New Jersey-based entrepreneurship training organization, has received a transformative three-year, $1.5 million grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to catalyze the nonprofit’s programmatic expansion in Trenton and throughout New Jersey. This award, approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, will provide $500,000 annually to advance RTC’s impactful entrepreneurship education and workforce development initiatives catering to historically marginalized communities.
The Dodge Foundation’s strategic investment will bolster entrepreneurship education centered on high-opportunity licensed, credentialed, and certified career pathways. It will also provide comprehensive one-on-one technical assistance, resilience coaching, and tailored business support to entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the grant will fund strategic innovation projects that integrate RTC’s established programs with statewide partners, thereby significantly expanding the reach and accessibility of services to underserved communities throughout New Jersey.
Recent federal government actions such as funding interruptions and cancellations, proposed budget cuts, threats to programs and tax-exempt status, and a volatile economy are creating existential challenges to nonprofit organizations and the people and communities they serve.

As we witness the initial impact of Hurricane Dorian, we are reminded that many of our communities are still targets for further devastation from this storm over the next few days.
While we recognize that many of us have survived recent hurricanes like Sandy and Maria, we also know that the struggle continues, and we need to do our best to help meet the needs of current victims caught in the wake of the storm.
In light of this situation, we are providing our membership with the latest information to help you determine how your organization might engage in response and recovery efforts.

- The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has created a Hurricane Dorian disaster profile, which provides updates on the storm as well as information on the areas of greatest need
- The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has also launched the CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund to support communities that will be affected by Hurricane Dorian. This fund focuses on medium- and long-term recovery, with the understanding that individuals and communities will need the support of private philanthropy for months and years to come as they navigate the road to recovery.
- The Disaster Philanthropy Playbook is a comprehensive handbook outlining best practices and innovative approaches that the philanthropic community can adopt in addressing recovery after natural disasters. CNJG’s lessons learned in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy helped lead the creation of this Playbook.
- Locally in Florida, the Miami Foundation for a Greater Miami created a Hurricane Dorian resource page.
- The Jessie Ball duPont Fund resource Creating Order from Chaos: Roles for Philanthropy in Disaster Planning and Response provides a framework for steps that can be taken for philanthropy to respond to disasters.
- The New York Times has released an article sharing multiple ways to help Hurricane Dorian survivors in the Bahamas.
- Charity Navigator has created a list of high-rated organizations providing aid and relief for Hurricane Dorian for both short-term and long-term relief.
- Sadly, CNJG’s post Sandy work and the briefings hosted and compiled by CNJG still hold lessons for today. You can review the briefings from Series 1 and Series 2 in either audio or written format. The briefings provide timely, relevant information about how grantmakers can help in the aftermath of a major storm.
