2023 marked the largest single-year increase in the number of people forcibly displaced worldwide with more than 110 million individuals forced to leave their homes due to persecution, conflict, or human rights violations. Violence has displaced people from Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gaza, Iraq, Myanmar, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and beyond. Political turmoil and economic instability have forced millions to flee Venezuela and elsewhere. Climate change has been amplifying extreme weather disasters and exacerbating regional conflicts, and the combined effects are estimated to displace nearly 2.5 billion people by 2050.
What do funders need to better understand about the global forces and systems that lead to forced displacement? How are groups responding to these global forces in a liberatory, intersectional, and transnational way? Frontline leaders and movements are, among other things, providing legal assistance and engaging in popular education. Join GCIR and these leaders as they discuss their responses to forced displacement.

In 2003, with member support, CNJG commissioned a report on the impact a potential conversion of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield to a for-profit might have on access to health care in New Jersey. Research from the Center for State Health Policy (CSHP) at Rutgers University, provided details about the law governing such conversions in New Jersey and the experience of other states with conversions. The report identified questions raised in other states when such conversions occur, especially about the valuation of assets, the impact on low-income families, and the operation of the philanthropic foundations that have been established as stewards of the assets generated by the conversions. CNJG’s purpose was to seek answers to critical questions relevant to the availability of healthcare coverage for New Jersey’s citizens and to discuss models of best practice for healthcare conversion foundations across the United States.

Seeking ways to maximize the social and economic returns of their place-based impact investments, foundations, CDFIs, private investors, and others are turning to collaboration. To support these efforts and facilitate lesson sharing, the Urban Institute and Mission Investors Exchange have produced a set of three practitioner briefs designed to focus on elements of place-based impact investing that have surfaced in research and conversations with practitioners as opportunities for knowledge exchange: building strong ecosystems, mapping opportunities and capacities, and deploying capital on the ground together through impact investing collaborations. Each brief presents the concept, highlights practitioner examples, and elevates lessons from the field.
In a 2013 survey, funders were asked about the biggest transparency challenges they faced. The highest response was “not enough clarity around practical steps for being transparent.” This guide from GrantCraft & Glasspockets is helping foundations open up with clear action steps. Opening Up: Demystifying Funder Transparency explores how transparency can strengthen credibility, improve grantee relationships, facilitate greater collaboration, increase public trust, reduce duplication of effort, and build communities of shared learning. It is organized into five topical chapters so that you can focus on exploring one approach to transparency at a time.

Impact100 South Jersey announced that it will award $200,000 in grants to local nonprofits as a result of its fall 2020 collective giving membership drive. Members gathered virtually on Wednesday, Jan 6th for the Big Reveal and celebration. The event was held to share the number of members who have joined and the total raised for grantmaking in 2021. This brings the total funds raised collectively by Impact100 South Jersey members to over $624,000 since 2017.
“With such a tremendous increase in need in our region, it’s been very rewarding to see how our generous members have responded, in a year that has been very challenging for many,” said Membership Co-Chair Angela Venti. “On behalf of the Impact100 Leadership Council, I’d like to express our deep appreciation for the way our new and existing members embraced coming together virtually in lieu of in person events, which we miss so much. We look forward to the time soon when we can bring our members together in person again to strengthen the bonds within our collective women’s giving community.”
