This toolkit is for seasoned donors, donor advised fund holders, foundation trustees, and staff who are taking steps to significantly ramp up the impact of their giving. No longer content with just “making good grants” or “doing good things for the community,” you have taken a fresh look at your goals, strategies, and outcomes and decided that you could do things differently to achieve even more.
We all know that setting bolder, bigger goals for impact is only step one. Implementing strategies and achieving these goals typically involves a winding path full of experiments, iterations, and obstacles. This toolkit is crafted to help seasoned funders anticipate common obstacles to high-impact philanthropy and learn about effective strategies to overcome them.
Every person wants to lead a safe and healthy life. We want the opportunity to fulfill our greatest potential, and to receive the support and guidance we need to travel down our own unique path. We wish this for ourselves and seek it for our children and loved ones.
In fact, communities all over the country go to great lengths to create conditions for young people to thrive. Every year, efforts to promote youth wellbeing amount to hundreds of billions of dollars in public expenditures in education, health care, community development, and related fields. Together with significant resource contributions from the philanthropic, nonprofit, academic and private sectors, these investments make clear that creating, promoting, and sustaining health and safety for young people is a national priority.
This report details how funders can embrace the power of young people to advance healthier and safer communities.
PEAK Grantmaking is working to better understand and build the capacity of grantmakers for collecting and utilizing demographic data as part of their grantmaking. Their work is focused on answering four key questions:
- What demographic data are grantmakers collecting and why?
- How are they collecting these demographic data?
- How is demographic data being used and interpreted?
- How can funders use demographic data to inform their work?
With the help of Kelly Brown, former Executive Director of the D5 Coalition, and an advisory committee of grantmakers, PEAK has completed an expansive survey, interviews with grantmakers, and field research on these four questions.
On this webinar, Newark funders discussed the childcare practice and policy during COVID-19 and heard front line observations on matters of mental health and domestic violence.

The New Jersey Arts and Culture Recovery Fund has awarded $1.3 million in grants to 68 nonprofits across the state in an effort to help them recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic.
This is the second round of grants awarded by NJACRF, which is hosted by the Princeton Area Community Foundation. Earlier this year, the fund provided $2.6 million in grants to more than 100 other arts, culture and historical nonprofits statewide.
COVID-19 shuttered venues and forced furloughs and layoffs of more than half of the state’s creative workforce. The state’s nonprofit arts industry reported pandemic-related losses of more than $100 million as of December.
In response to the needs of the arts community, NJACRF was established last year with a gift from the Grunin Foundation, based in Toms River. A coalition of funders quickly followed with their support, to ensure the recovery of the industry.
Funders can now integrate Candid's Demographics API into their systems. This free API seamlessly adds demographic data about nonprofits to their records.
Join Hannah Oren, Candid's Solutions Engineer, to learn more about the API and how it keeps data current while also reducing administrative burdens on nonprofits.

With new data in year two of a three-year study, the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) further analyzes the effects and emerging impacts of MacKenzie Scott’s large, unrestricted gifts. For the first time, they examine to what extent Scott’s giving has influenced other funders’ approaches and continue to investigate whether nonprofits believe the grant increased their impact, whether they have experienced any unintended negative consequences, and more.
