CNJG’s Finance and Investment Affinity Group exists to keep foundation executives informed as they manage the investment of their corpus. Growth of foundation assets and the active exchange of sound investment strategies is the focus of each program.
After a positive year for both stock and bond markets that caught many investors off guard, grantmaking organizations and their boards may be wondering whether 2024 will be a repeat of 2023, or a reversal. Join us for a breakfast presentation and Q&A where we will discuss J.P. Morgan’s views across traditional and alternative asset classes for the year ahead.
Michael Garvey is a Managing Director and the East Region Head ofJ.P. Morgan’s Outsourced Chief Investment Office. In this role, he manages the OCIO team’s largest geography by AUM. Michael and his team work with endowments, foundations and institutional family offices across the country to develop investment strategies, build customized separately managed portfolios and invest across long-only and alternative investments for some of the most sophisticated investors around the world.
Michael Pages is a Senior Banker and Executive Director at J.P. Morgan. He works alongside a team of professionals who share responsibility for advising endowments, foundations and select family offices across the US on a variety of matters including asset allocation, portfolio construction, capital and liquidity strategies and execution. He has deep expertise in the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) model and is Team Lead.

About the Trends report
The Trends survey captures and tracks leading trends in the field of family philanthropy. Conducted every five years, this research identifies emerging issues, changes in funding priorities and governance practices, innovative approaches to giving and decision making, and anticipated future giving patterns and practices among US-based philanthropic families nationally. Ultimately, it aims to equip donors with data they can apply to their decision making.
Novartis benchmarked Employee Crisis Programs, and asked fellow corporate funders via the corporate funders listserve to answer the questions below.
- If you have an Employee Crisis Program, what is the name
- Do you manage the program internally or thru a 3rd party? If you use a 3rd party, can you share their name/website and any good/bad experiences.
- Do you only support disasters or other hardships as well?
- What is the average percentage of your employees that apply for aid?
- What is your minimum and maximum funding?
- What is the average amount of aid?
- Do you provide aid directly to the employee and/or vendors?
- Do you allow employees to donate to your fund? If so, how do you promote awareness and what is the employee donation participation rate? Do you match these donations?

Two different CNJG members queried the CEO listserve on how/when/how to return to the office following the COVID-19 pandemic. CNJG staff compiled the answers from the responding members removing identifying information of the respondents.
Igniting Equitable Systems Change Together

On May 26, the Council brought together recognized thought leaders from philanthropy and nonprofits for a conversation exploring how the social sector can advance systems change.
Grantmakers and nonprofits grapple with complex, structural issues every day, and take on the difficult questions to move our collective work forward.
During a dynamic discussion, panelists shared strategies to empower proximate leaders, remove structural barriers and build the capacity of grassroots organizations, and shift mental models to challenge assumptions and strengthen nonprofit-funder relationships. After the panel, case study presenters highlighted three local examples of systems change, emphasizing the importance of cross-sector collaboration, collective action, and community engagement. Then, attendees gathered together for small group discussions to unpack key takeaways and discuss their own successes and challenges with systems change.
One of the most highly regarded convenings for social sector leaders in the state, the 2022 Virtual Spring Colloquium considered the power and cultural shifts needed to advance systems change through philanthropic and nonprofit partnership.

In April, we celebrate Global Volunteer Month, and for corporate volunteer programs this represents a wonderful opportunity to engage your employees through volunteerism. Over the past three years, there has been a whirlwind of change around these volunteer programs, moving away from in-person to virtual volunteer events, and a rethinking by many companies about how these programs now work with remote employees.
Join your fellow corporate CNJG members for an online discussion (via Zoom) about your volunteer programs; how they’ve changed, and how they continue to evolve as we emerge from the pandemic. We will hear from Rowena Madden from the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism on a state-level view of volunteerism, and then we will have a dedicated time to hear from your corporate peers from across the state on their programs, and a time for you to share what your company is doing. We encourage every attendee to participate in this discussion. You may wish to share your answers to these questions or others that come up in the conversation:
