The opioid epidemic continues to be a major public health crisis affecting both rural and urban areas. In 2023 alone over 80,000 Americans died from an opioid overdose. Communities face specific challenges in dealing with this crisis based on their location. These challenges include prevention methods, immediate services provision, and ongoing treatment. All funders—not just those focused on health issues—can make a difference.
In this conversation you will learn about:
-How communities are using federal investment, such as the Paradigm program, to provide advanced medical services to rural communities.
-How family funders can support community partners in responding to this crisis.
-Opportunities to support preventive methods for young people in education settings and to support incarcerated individuals seeking treatment.
-Ways that donors can provide key investments in solutions alongside state and federal mechanisms.

Michael Pages is a Senior Banker and Executive Director at J.P. Morgan. He works alongside a team of professionals who share responsibility for advising endowments, foundations and select family offices across the US on a variety of matters including asset allocation, portfolio construction, capital and liquidity strategies and execution. He has deep expertise in the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) model and is Team Lead.
Chris Baldi is a Vice President and Investment Specialist at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. He is responsible for advising ultra-high net worth families and senior executives on a variety of matters including asset allocation, portfolio construction, capital and liquidity strategies and execution.

In 2007, CNJG brought together the state's philanthropic sector to leverage its collective resources, knowledge, and expertise for the good of New Jersey’s citizens. All told, 39 funders throughout New Jersey leveraged more than $100,000 with a match of $300,000 from the State in support of the Civic Justice Corps. The program sought to embrace court-involved and formerly incarcerated youth who complete extensive service projects in their own neighborhoods, while also attending classes to obtain their GED. New Jersey Together was in place for two years in three pilot cities.

The effects of COVID-19 continue to be felt all around New Jersey. In order to dig deeper into the impact of the pandemic on certain communities and stay connected during this difficult time, CNJG worked with our affinity group chairs and other members to develop programming that supplemented our COVID-19 Funders Briefing Series and Newark COVID-19 Series. These virtual affinity and interest group meetings were designed for colleagues to update each other on coronavirus response efforts, hear about the greatest needs in their funding area, and share what they have learned. CNJG members can access the recordings of these past meetings to hear what was said.
Please join us for our first Newark Funder Affinity Group Meeting of 2025. We will use this time to receive an update from La Casa de Don Pedro and partners on funding and the plan for their resource center, discuss the new federal policy and grant environment, and update each other on priorities in order to identify areas of possible collaboration for 2025 and beyond.
