By now I hope you have seen the notices for the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers’ upcoming Spring Colloquium: A Conversation on the Social Sector, scheduled for May 24th. This year’s conversation promises to be another excellent exploration of the major shifts taking place in the social sector and the influences shaping the work of philanthropy and charities on the ground.
Breaking Through in the New Media Paradigm will delve into the ways in which funders and nonprofits can consider and harness the radical changes taking place in media. We have enlisted four dynamic thought leaders and practitioners, bringing national and local—as well as funder and grantee—perspectives to the discussion:
- Nicole Broznan – Senior Communications Officer, RWJF and former journalist with The New York Times and ProPublica
- Jamie McDonald – CEO, Generosity Inc. and TheCourage.Us
- Betsy Theobald Richards – Director of Creative Strategies, The Opportunity Agenda and former Program Officer with The Ford Foundation
- Michael Shapiro – CEO and Publisher, TAPinto.net
You’ll hear more about these fascinating and insightful colleagues over the next few weeks.
The biennial Spring Colloquium has truly become one of CNJG’s leading signature events. The only gathering we produce that is open to “the public”…that is funders and nonprofits…it remains one of the most popular and highly anticipated events in the state. In addition to offering an opportunity to step out of the regular day-to-day priorities and consider the tensions and innovations shaping the sector, the Spring Colloquium introduces New Jersey’s nonprofit and foundation leaders to national voices that are charting new paths, influencing change, and helping to craft a better world.
In the past decade, no other industry as essential to the work of the social sector has changed as dramatically as “the media.” Journalism. Entertainment. Broadcast. Streaming. Print. Digital. Social. If you are looking to your grantees to effect change, impact communities, and build networks, funders need to understand, consider, and appreciate the environment in which we are all now working. Join us on May 24th as we get some grounding and together explore what the future might hold. This conversation may very well help shape your conversations throughout 2018 and beyond.
In the meantime, remember what all these April showers will bring…
Nina Stack, President
