The Community Foundation of New Jersey awarded 5,718 unique grants totaling $56 million last year, topping the benchmarks of $44 million distributed by the foundation in 2015. Of those grants, 2,774 unique grants totaling $36.5 million supported nonprofits in New Jersey.
Established in 1979, the nonprofit CFNJ is an alliance of families, businesses and foundations that work together by supporting a combination of more than 1,100 legacy and donor-advised funds, granting an average of more than $30 million annually to charitable organizations.
The 2015 total of $100 million set a new standard for the fund. Last year's total marked the largest year-to-year increase of philanthropic assets in the organization's 36-year history.
