Why sunset? Is there an advised timeline for spending down? How do foundations support grantee partners when exiting? We’ve seen large and small foundations across the county announce their decision to sunset, but many are still unsure and have big questions before making the leap.

Join us for a discussion with several sunsetting foundation. Leaders in different points of this journey will answer questions on how and why they made the decision to sunset, practical considerations for spending down, challenges they have encountered along the way, and how they are communicating this process with grantee and philanthropic partners.

While a Center for Effective Philanthropy 2016 report found that there is still much uncertainty about the practice of spending down, the top reason for sunsetting was clear - an opportunity to make greater impact. So, whether you’re undecided or just curious to learn more about the case for spending down – you’ll want to hear how these foundations are making a difference by closing their doors.

This will be a panel discussion, followed by time for Q&A.
